Though the chances that you will face card fraud are still low, plastic card compromise is always a possibility. While there is no way that we, or any other financial institution, can stop merchant databases from being compromised, the following standard industry practices are built in to protect your credit and debit cards.
The EMV microchip cards use cryptographic algorithms to protect your information in two ways. First, every transaction uses a unique encryption key, including your name, card number, time and date, and store information. This makes it almost impossible to hack the transaction and steal your information. Secondly, because it's a unique encryption key each time you use the card, even if the information is stolen, the thieves aren't able to use it again.
Personal Identification Number (PIN)
You are assigned or may choose a 4-digit code (PIN) to be entered for any PIN transaction. Never disclose your PIN to anyone. If you think your PIN has been compromised, Member Services will change it anytime you like. You just have to stop by one of our offices and they will take care of it for you.
Cards are shipped to you in “inactive” status, with an assigned PIN sent separately. You must call a toll-free number to activate your card, using information known only to you.
Card Verification Values (CVV)
The 3-digit CVV security code following the signature panel on the back of your card is requested by merchants to protect transactions on the Internet, by mail or fax, or over the phone.
The expiration date embossed on your card must match the expiration date on file for your card.
Daily spending limits protect your account in the event of any compromise.
